If grass gets overgrown, a reel mower will merely push it down and roll right over it, so if you tend to go a while between mowings, you should stick with a regular push mower. One long term tester had to wait so long for the reel mower to arrive that once it got there, the grass had grown so high they needed to hire someone to cut their grass. Third, reel mowers are troublesome on sloped or bumpy lawns. The torque that turns the blades comes from the wheels as you roll them along the ground.
On an uneven surface, the wheels lose contact with the ground as they bounce or as the weight shifts on a slope. In fact, the results in general may not be what you expect. He explained that reel mowers can cut much closer to the ground than rotary mowers. At the golf course, the crew uses reel mowers to cut greens and approaches but uses gas-powered rotary mowers for the rough. The maximum cutting height, however, is very important, and we used this spec as our primary factor in eliminating mowers from contention.
We then looked at other factors: How easy is the mower to adjust? How hard is it to push? How wide is it? How much does it weigh? We looked for models with a history of robust user reviews. At that point we took our final four mowers to the golf course.
There the grounds crew helped us adjust the blades to the exact same standard they used on their mowers so that the blades could cleanly slice a piece of paper. Over the next three hours, we pushed all four mowers back and forth on different-height grasses.
On hand were course superintendent Scott Dunbar, a member of the grounds crew, a mechanic who maintains the course equipment, and an equipment salesman who happened to be at the course that day. These guys are all turfgrass experts who deal with grass and mowing equipment every day. They really took to the task of comparing these mowers, examining every aspect closely and answering all our questions about turf and cut quality. We mowed tall, weedy grass, and recently cut grass that was already low, and mowed everything in between.
Choosing between the Scotts model made by the American Lawnmower Company and usually marketed under the Scotts name and the Fiskars mower made by the Finnish company known for its orange-handled bladed tools was initially quite difficult, as both did an excellent job cutting grass. But after a great deal of back and forth and discussing our options with Dunbar and the grounds crew, we came to an unanimous agreement on a pick.
It also has a wide, inch cutting swath—the widest we found—as well as height adjustments between 1 and 3 inches, which is a more versatile range than we saw on almost all of the other available reel mowers. The quality of the cut is where the Scotts excelled against the competition.
When our lawn experts were going back and forth with the mowers on a variety of grasses and lengths, they noticed that the Scotts model would leave a swath of totally trimmed grass with each blade snipped evenly across, no ragged edges to be seen. In contrast, the other mowers would leave a bunch of blades sticking up like chimneys after a house fire, requiring the testers to back up and go over the area again. The Scotts mower also never jammed up during testing, whereas all of the other mowers did.
And not only was the cut quality good, but with each pass the Scotts also snipped a wider path than most of the others. The Scotts is a inch-wide mower, the widest size available the measurement refers to the blade width, not the overall width.
Our testers also gave the Scotts high marks for overall usability. At 34 pounds, it lands in the middle of our test group in weight but manages to hit the sweet spot between maneuverability and stability. The Fiskars StaySharp Max is heavier and harder to turn around at the end of a mowing row; by contrast, the lighter Lee Valley model bounced around on uneven ground and left a ragged cut as a result.
In addition, all of the adjustments on the Scotts mower are easy to make. For cutting height, it has two levers, one for each wheel. One other model we tested, the inch Great States , required us to unbolt it each time we wanted to change the cutting height. Also, the height settings on the Scotts model are accurate; the 1-inch setting on the Fiskars, in contrast, actually cut much lower, practically scalping the lawn, before we readjusted it to a higher setting.
The Scotts has a cutting range of 1 to 3 inches. The vast majority of reel mowers top out around 2 inches, so we appreciated the ability to go taller, either for the health of the grass or for a less manicured look. On the sides of the mower there are large treaded wheels made of plastic, and while these do a good job of providing grip and making movement smoother, they also prevent you from getting really close cuts to the edges of your lawn, but this can be said for pretty much all mowers with large wheels on the outside.
On the back of the mower you will find a roller to help produce a nicely striped lawn, and also the controls for height adjustment of the cutting blades. These controls are very simple and well designed and changing through the settings from 12mmmm only requires the sliding of a small handle. The Gardena cylinder push mower is higher on the price scale than most of our reviewed products all except the Fiskars but there is still certainly value for money here.
If I said that this Webb cylinder mower was well-built, sturdy, durable, etc. It has a solidity to it that would make me feel comfortable going to war with it! Joking aside, this is a well put together bit of kit, and with that comes the inevitable extra weight. Sure, it requires a little more effort to carry around and push so maybe not suitable for the elderly or infirm, but it does mean that the lawnmower is firmly planted on the lawn and gives you a nice uniform cut.
It also helps to provide pressure to the 18 inch, two piece rear roller making it more effective than a lot of lightweight cylinder mowers. There is a heavy duty control for the height adjustment, and this has a wide range of heights from a minimum of 12mm to a maximum of 75mm. The mechanism works really smoothly and gives the impression of being made to last, like the rest of this cylinder push mower. Another part of the design that I like with the Webb cylinder push mower is that the grass box is fixed onto the front rather than the rear and this made it less cumbersome to push around.
There are a few things to consider when deciding on whether to buy a cylinder push mower or not. On the plus side, they are inexpensive, both initial and of course there are pretty much zero running costs. They also give you a closer cut and more control than electric or petrol rotary lawnmowers, and are better for the environment.
On the other hand, these mowers do require a bit more physical effort to push around the garden, especially heavier models. They also struggle with grass that has been allowed to grow too long, so you will have to mow more regularly. Life is much more enjoyable that way when using a push mower. Lightweight models are obviously easier to carry around and push over the lawn, but sometimes, in the process of saving weight, manufacturers make these mowers less stable or have parts that are easy to break.
Heavier cylinder mowers are the opposite, they are indeed harder to push around but the extra weight is usually a sign of increased durability, and the heaviness can help to keep the mower stable. If your lawn is really bumpy, using a cylinder push lawnmower is probably not the best choice, and you should think about getting an electric lawnmower instead as cylinder models work best on flatter lawns.
Not all models will cut in the same way. You should look for a mower that has hardened, high quality steel blades and that cut against a second fixed blade. There are some features that work better too, like the cylinder blade and the fixed blade not coming into contact as this will reduce friction. Adjustable blade height is almost a given with these mowers but the height settings will differ from model to model, as will the controls for changing them.
You want to find a mower that has easy to reach controls and that are well made as cheap ones may break after a short while. Are they foldable or easily detached for easy storage?
Are they designed ergonomically for comfort or have a soft coating for extra grip? However, some models have four inner wheels which solves this issue. The ability to reverse the grass cutting output direction is quite handy though.
